| "Katunar" Winery
The coastal region of Croatia has a long-standing tradition
in winemaking, which dates back to Ancient times. It gained
acclaim thanks to the wines of Pucinia of which Pliny (1st
century) says: "Her 86 years Julia Augusta could thank
the wine of Pucinia for she drank only it and no other.
It grows in coves along the Adriatic Sea, not far from the
source of the Timava, on the ridge of a hill and bathed
by the sea current. It is stored in a small number of amphorae
and it is belived that there is no better remedy."
It is on this tradition that villages throughout the island
of Krk have based the production of their renowned wines,
notably Vrbnik where such a tradition has survived to this
day. The brothers Anton and Ivan Katunar have modernised
the family tradition; they have built new cellars, introduced
new technology and restored a century-old tradition of sparkling
wine production. Alongside their renowned Žlahtina and red
wines, they also produce sparkling wines.
